Florida Man Convicted Under Digital Piracy Legislation

A 38-year-old Florida man has become the first person to be found guilty by jury under the 1998 U.S. digital piracy law.

Thomas Whitehead of Boca Raton was found guilty in a Florida court of one count of conspiracy, two counts of selling devices designed to unlawfully decrypt satellite transmissions and three counts of violating the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.

During the four-day trial the court heard how Whitehead, aka JungleMike, had paid $250 a month for access to the codes to reprogram DirectTV satellite TV signals, and sold reprogrammed cards on to several people wanting to view programming for free.

Whitehead is expected to be sentenced on January 26 and faces up to 30 years in jail, and/or fines of up to $2.75 million.
