Fingerprint scanning "unsuitable" for public projects
Biometric identification may be easy to bypass and unsuitable for public deployment.
In a letter to Bruce Schneier's Crypto-Gram newsletter, biometric researcher
Ton van der Putte claims experiments have shown that commercial fingerprint scanners
are easily fooled using cheap materials and minimal efforts, questioning the
use of this technology in government ID-card programmes.
Van der Putte says that using only a digital camera, a UV lamp and $10-$20 of
readily available material, he was able to achieve "perfect results", creating
fake fingers and lifting fingerprint residue from readers' scanning surfaces.
"It is our opinion," van der Putte says, "that as long as the manufacturers of
fingerprint equipment do not solve the live detection problem…biometric fingerprint
sensors should not be used in combination with identity cards, or in medium to
high security applications. In fact, we even believe that identity cards with
fingerprint biometrics are in fact weaker than cards without it."
